The Big House serves as the central hub of camp during the summer season, housing the kitchen and dining facilites. People congregate there during the day and evening before retiring to their tents to sleep. In addition to the social aspects, the satellite communications link and other radio gear are located in the building. During the winter over period, the Big House provides a haven away from primary bearthing quarters for the crew members.
