The science trench is one of the active areas for research around the camp. A series of instrumnets near the trench record a variety of measurements. The computers and data loggers for the instruments are safely located away from the extreme conditions on the surface by being placed into a trench located about 20 feet below the surface. People can enter the trench through a hatch which leads to a set of stairs leading down into a small room carved from the snow.
