HOW TO ACCESS THE PRINTER

There currently is a printer connected to the guest PC in the Big House. It is a Lexmark Optra E312 laser printer capable of printing both PCL and Postscript documents. The printer is shared out to the network, so any computer should be able to access it.

  1. Make sure that you can see the network. Click on Network Neighborhood and then double click Entire Network to browse the machines on the net. You should see the server and guest PC on the SUMMITGROUP work group. If you do not, read the How to access the server for the steps necessary to access the local network services.
  2. Double-click on Server in the SUMMITGROUP network. You should see two printer icons show up. Each one points to the same printer, but are able to handle different langauges that the printer understands. PCL is an acronym for Printer Control Language, while PS means PostScript. It is usually sufficient to just pick one of the two unless you have special needs.

  3. Choose one of the printers to install. When you do so, Windows will then proceed to ask you if you want to install the printer. Click on Yes to continue.

  4. Windows will then ask you if you want to use the printer for DOS-based programs. You can generaly say No here. The next step is to give the printer a name and decide if it will be the default printer. The next screen asks if you want a test page (doing so is a good idea).

  5. Windows will then search to find the drivers. We have installed a set on the sever that should automatically get downloaded if you are using Windows 95/98. Otherwise, you might be presented with a list of printers and manufacturers. From this list, pick the one for the Lexmark Optra E series. This often is either for the E310 or E312. If you cannot find an appropriate driver, you can also choose to install the Postscript driver (the Apple Laserwriter will do). Make sure to do this on the lexmark-ps printer.

You can also download the drivers for the printer from the Lexmark website at www.lexmark.com. We have also put them into the Files section on the server for a quicker download (it is a large file).
