HOW TO CONNECT TO THE NETWORK

The local area network for Summit Camp is based on the 802.11b wireless standard. The network operates like a traditional hardwired ethernet network, except that you access it through a small wireless network PC Card. You do not need to be directly connected to the LAN, which means you can pick up your laptop and use it anywhere in camp. The 802.11b standard is becoming increasingly popular, and you might already be using it at home or the office. Most people will access the network from their laptops using a wireless network PC Card. We have cards available for loan while you are at camp, jusk ask the camp manager for one.

If you are bringing up a desktop machine, there are two options available for connecting to the network. To make a wireless connection, we have adapter cards that allow you to use the same PC Cards as the laptops. These adapters come in both ISA and PCI bus flavors and work with most versions of Windows. The second option is to hardware into the network in the Greenhouse. We have a 24-port network switch for the lab machines that can bridge them onto the local wireless network.

If you need to temporarily hook a laptop up to the LAN through a hardwired connection, you can either do it through the Greenhouse switch, or the small 4-port hub located in the Big House near the guest computer. People often use this setup to download the drivers for the wireless network cards.
